Abandon hope, all ye who expect too much…

10 minutes to write something on the theme of ‘expectation’…

Of all the forces raging against them, of all the heights that were impossible to scale, of all the barriers they simply could not pass, the worst and most dispiriting was surely expectation.

It seemed strange, even bizarre. They had achieved so much; smashed through the gates which had been locked for so long and blown wide open the doors to a new, brighter world… At that moment everything had seemed possible.

“Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive”, Wordsworth had said. The exultation and the ecstacy, the sheer unbridled joy at having sampled the taste of freedom, of LIBERTY! Truly, it had been intoxicating. A kind of madness had enveloped them… Not all, you understand, but enough to divert the people away from real progress, from genuine revolution.

The expectation… That is what drove it. We wanted everything, all of it, at once. It wasn’t enough to merely be rid of the parasites from within, nor to be safe from those who threatened us from without. We expected utopia on earth. What we created, was a hell.

Nonetheless, we intend to try again. For although the first man who leapt from a tall building with improvised wings did surely fall to his death, with the benefit of hindsight we all know how humanity’s endeavours in that regard were destined to end.

One day, we did learn how to fly.

Solidarity, brothers & sisters…
